For a low loaded-travel display, the inspected CAT 980 has the more useful bucket attitude. The CAT 972 XE can still suit a stationary plain-edge presentation, but its carry geometry should not be inferred from its maximum lift.
Compare the position you will leave on the shelf
| Decision | 972 XE · 85683 | 980 · 85684 |
|---|---|---|
| Low carry angle | No meaningful carry angle reported | Useful carry angle reported |
| Bucket appearance | Plain leading edge | Toothed V-shaped leading edge |
| Pose concern | Highest lift would not hold | Rear axle looser than desired |
| Cab occupancy | Fixed operator | Fixed operator |
These separate inspections identify what to request in photographs; they do not establish production-wide fault rates. The 972 XE review focuses on low carry and lift retention. The 980 review makes rear stance the corresponding offered-item check.
When the plain edge is non-negotiable
A subject-specific collection may favor the 972 XE despite the movement reservation. That is coherent if the intended stationary pose is acceptable. It is not coherent to buy it for a low rolled-back load pose while ignoring the evidence about that exact movement.
Do not treat a current offer price as compensation for the wrong pose. First decide whether the model meets the display requirement; only then compare current merchant terms.
