A model can fit a shelf while its scenic base overhangs it. The reverse is also possible: a neat rectangular base fits, but the boom or bucket projects beyond it. Keep these as two separate measurements until the final arrangement is chosen.
| Outline | What belongs in it |
|---|---|
| Base | Its outer edges, including projecting scenery |
| Posed model | Every part extending beyond the base or rising above it |
| Enclosure interior | Usable space after the cover, frame and supports are accounted for |
The weathered 420F2 IT listing gives an approximate overall size but does not define whether the dirt base is included. Recording that number as a verified base footprint would create false precision.
Use a top-down layout
Draw the base rectangle and mark any model overhang outside it. Put the drawing on the intended shelf and check access to remove the model. Then measure height in the same pose. This produces a usable fit record without combining the shortest length from one pose with the lowest height from another.
