A side-on display makes the CAT 336’s boom construction unusually important. Diecast Masters 85586 has useful small details, but the published inspection identifies a visible joint and a bending ram jacket that deserve attention before choosing this particular release.

Inspect the side you will actually display

  • The boom and stick use a side insert, leaving a visible joint on one side.
  • The inspection also observed the upper ram jacket curving under load.

Ask for a close photograph of that side with the arm in the intended position. A favorable photograph of the opposite profile cannot resolve either concern.

A trench scene exposes the movement compromise

Lowering the boom for digging at depth was notably restricted in the inspected example, with substantial piston length still exposed.

Rotation was also stiffer than usual on that sample. These observations do not establish a defect rate, but they make a deep-cut scene a poor assumption to build into a purchase.

Where the detail can still earn its place

Perforated steps, metal handrails and hydraulic detailing offer reasons to consider a closer view of the body.

An above-ground pose may put those features to better use than a scene demanding maximum digging depth. Compare the different finish and movement compromises in the CAT 330 85585 review before treating either Next Generation model as an interchangeable choice.

Pros & Cons Analysis

See the source attributions and review limitations below.

Pros

  • An empty cab can suit a parked fleet, while the separate operator suits a work scene. This flexibility is more relevant than a feature tally if the model will remain behind glass.

Cons

  • Choose the side that will face the viewer, then inspect a close photograph of that same side. A seam that is unobtrusive from one angle may dominate another.
  • The ram observation concerns the published sample. Ask for current seller photographs when that area is important; it does not establish a production-wide failure rate.
  • For a trench display, the arm’s lowered position matters more than its maximum height. Obtain a pose image before cutting a recess into a scenic base.

A 336 collection needs a 336-specific reason

This release belongs on the shortlist because you want the 336 subject, with the documented finish and movement reservations accepted. A generic need for “a Next Generation excavator” is not enough to distinguish it from the 330.

Choose the view before choosing between them.

Use a close photograph of the boom side you will see most. If the scene depends on a low bucket position, resolve that pose too; similar catalog sizes do not answer either question.

Was the bending ram observed on every model?

No. It was described in one published firsthand sample. We have not established how common that appearance is.
