Diecast Masters 85686 CAT 966 review: look at the wheel detail, not an imagined carry improvement

On the standard CAT 966, silver-highlighted wheel bolts and joystick controls give you specific details to inspect. They do not cure the bucket’s weak travel posture. If the goal is a loader carrying a raised-back bucket near the ground, this release has the same important limitation documented for the 966 GC.
The bucket separates a loading pose from a travel pose
Raised and discharging
The original inspection describes reasonable lift and tipping movement. A raised-bucket presentation is supported.
Low and carrying
There is no meaningful rollback into a carry angle. The wheel and cab detail cannot change that geometry.
The 966 inspection also records an oscillating rear axle and moderate articulated steering. Those movements change the stance underneath the loader; they are not additional bucket movement.
Follow the detailing from the wheels to the linkage
- The wheel bolts receive silver highlights, providing a visible focal point beside the tire tread.
- The cab contains a fixed operator using joystick controls, with metal rails outside.
- At the center pivot and loader rams, visible hydraulic hoses are absent. Plastic piston jackets and simple arms make this area less elaborate.
This uneven distribution of detail is a more useful way to judge the model than counting moving parts. A wheel-level photograph and a close view of the central linkage reveal quite different strengths.
For the neighboring release, the 966 versus 966 GC comparison separates visible differences from the operating limitations the two miniatures share.
Pros & Cons Analysis
See the source attributions and review limitations below.
Pros
- The inspected model’s lift and tip make a raised bucket a credible focal point. That benefit should be kept separate from its inability to curl convincingly in a low travel position.
- Rear-axle oscillation and articulated steering allow the chassis stance to change. They add interest around the wheels without promising a sharp steering lock.
- Silver wheel-bolt highlights give the running gear definition, while the joystick-equipped cab supplies a recognizable operator station.
Cons
- The fixed operator cannot provide a documented empty-cab option. It limits a parked or transported presentation when an unoccupied machine is essential.
- The pivot and cylinder areas omit visible hoses. Buyers who particularly enjoy tracing hydraulic lines will find this treatment simpler than the wheel detailing.
The standard 966 earns attention through its detailing
Select 85686 because the standard 966 subject, wheel highlights and joystick-equipped cab are the details you want. Its useful raised-bucket pose does not make it a strong low-carry model.
Moving from the GC to this release solely to improve bucket rollback is not supported by the inspections.
