Before ordering a CAT 966M, distinguish this small High Line release from the much larger weathered offer. Code 85948 is 1:87; 85703 is 1:50 and includes terrain. The same subject name does not make their dimensions, contents or movement interchangeable.

How much separates it from the HO 972M?
The original 966M inspection and 972M inspection describe similar restricted lift and tip, loose articulation and simplified underside detail. The 972M inspection identifies a larger bucket and counterweight. That is a visible subject difference, not proof of a better range of motion.
For an existing HO collection, the honest reason to select this 966M is that it is the subject and outline wanted. Its useful low bucket attitudes do not make it a high-loading specialist. Nor would choosing the 972M automatically remove the shared movement compromises.
Pros & Cons Analysis
See the source attributions and review limitations below.
Pros
- The articulated steering permits a visible turn in a compact scene. The inspection found it loose, so evaluate the actual resting angle rather than assuming firm detents.
Cons
- The cab and thin external rails include plastic parts. A metal chassis does not make every projecting detail equally resistant to handling.
Choose the 966M subject, not an imagined motion advantage
This release is appropriate when 1:87 scale and the 966M identity are the requirements. The larger-bucket 972M is a different subject choice; its similar reported movement limits make a capability upgrade an unsupported reason to switch.
